Beginning around , film preservationist Ronald Haver did extensive research of the Warner Bros. In , a minute restored i.
The project was a collaboration between the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the studio. Some of the missing footage had to be reconstructed using pan and scan of production stills , accompanied by the restored dialogue.
The original multi-track stereophonic sound also was restored. Within the next year, more discoveries followed. Many [ who? The film was remade in Bollywood as Aashiqui 2 in The original film is in the public domain.
Filming began April 17, , and the film was released on October 5, All four of the official "A Star is Born" movies have been nominated for at least four Academy Awards.
The soundtrack has never been out of print. In , Columbia released the soundtrack on compact disc, taking the overture and the main musical numbers directly from the film's stereo soundtrack due to the fact no stereo pre-recordings for the soundtrack master existed for this number.
In , in commemoration of the film's 50th anniversary, Columbia, Legacy Recordings , and Sony Music Soundtrax released a nearly complete, digitally-remastered, expanded edition of the soundtrack.
Due to the lack of a complete multitrack version of all songs and score from the film, the CD includes a mix of monaural and stereo elements in order to make as complete a soundtrack as possible.
Due in part to the fact that some of the songs were not complete on the film soundtrack, as well as the fact that many of the original music stems had been lost or destroyed subsequent to original mono mixdown, numbers such as "Here's What I'm Here For" and "Lose That Long Face" are taken from the original mono LP masters.
Other numbers such as "Gotta Have Me Go with You" are mostly in stereo, save for brief sections where the mono soundtrack album master was used in order to remove various endemic plot-related sound effects from the track.
All of the instrumental tracks are in mono as well due to the fact that the original elements have been lost or destroyed. The soundtrack also includes three vocal outtakes — an alternative vocal for the reprise of "It's a New World" that Esther sings while Norman goes for his final swim; "When My Sugar Walks Down the Street", which was intended to be part of the "Born in a Trunk" sequence, but was deleted for time constraints; and "The Trinidad Coconut Oil Shampoo Commercial", which was taken from the only surviving recording of the complete track, a very worn acetate artist reference disc.
In addition, much of the instrumental portion of the soundtrack contains partial or whole outtakes.
The original Columbia mono vinyl version of the soundtrack has been released on CD in Britain by Prism Leisure and is available for digital download.
This version includes bonus tracks of Judy Garland's Decca recordings of songs from other films. Warner Home Video released the minute "restored" version on DVD in letterbox widescreen format on September 19, The film was digitally remastered from original CinemaScope elements for superior picture clarity and optimal audio vitality and features a remastered English audio soundtrack in Dolby Digital 5.
Bonus features include the network telecast of the September 29, Hollywood premiere at the Pantages Theatre ; highlights from the post-premiere party at the Cocoanut Grove ; three alternative filmings of "The Man That Got Away" with additional original recording session music; a short musical sequence that appeared in a test screening but was deleted before the film's official premiere, "When My Sugar Walks Down the Street" which was to be part of the extended "Born in a Trunk" sequence ; and the theatrical trailers for this, the original, and the remake.
The original production negative has been restored and transferred to video at 6K resolution, one of the first films transferred at such a high resolution; however, according to a Warner press release, no new footage has been found.
The restoration "has meticulously preserved and restored Ronald Haver 's minute version of A Star Is Born to its original luster, bringing back the brilliant, saturated colors and crisp picture.

A chronicle of the ambitions, dreams, and disappointments of aspiring actresses who all live in the same boarding house. A young woman comes to Hollywood with dreams of stardom, and achieves them only with the help of an alcoholic leading man whose best days are behind him.
This early version of "A Star is Born" is well-performed by a good cast, and an interesting story. The basic idea is fairly simple, but filled with potential, and it is done skillfully.
Janet Gaynor and Frederic March work very well as a Hollywood couple whose careers are headed in different directions, with March's performance being especially good.
The rest of the cast rounds out the picture nicely with good performances of their own. While the inside look at Hollywood is interesting in its own right, the heart of the story is the way that the couple's marriage and relationships are affected by her career taking off at the same time that his is crashing.
It's the kind of story that only works with believable characters, careful writing, and convincing acting, and all of those are present here.
While overshadowed by the lavish 50's remake, this earlier version is still quite worthwhile in its own right. Sign In. Keep track of everything you watch; tell your friends.

When they return, Esther's popularity continues to skyrocket, while Norman realizes his own career is over, despite Oliver's attempts to help him.
Norman stays sober for a while, but his frustration over his situation finally pushes him over the edge and he starts drinking again.
When Esther wins the industry's top award the Academy Award for Best Actress , he interrupts her acceptance speech by drunkenly demanding three awards for the worst acting of the year and accidentally slapping her when he dramatically swings his arms back.
A stay at a sanatorium seems to cure Norman's increasingly disruptive alcoholism, but a chance encounter with Libby gives the press agent an opportunity to vent his long-concealed contempt.
Norman goes on a four-day drinking binge and winds up arrested for drunk driving. In court, the judge sentences him to 90 days of incarceration, but Esther pleads with the judge to put Norman under her care.
The judge, who is impressed with Esther's acting success, suspends Norman's sentence and puts Norman's custody into Esther's hands.
Esther decides to give up her career to devote herself to his rehabilitation. After Norman overhears her discussing her plan with Oliver, he drowns himself in the Pacific Ocean.
Shattered, Esther decides to quit and go home. Showing up soon afterward is her grandmother, who has heard Esther is quitting.
Her grandmother tells her of a letter Norman sent her when they got married. The letter stated how proud he was of Esther and how much he loved her.
Because of her grandmother's words, and the reminder of Norman's deep love, Esther is convinced to stay in show business.
At the premiere of her next film at Grauman's Chinese Theatre , when Esther is asked to say a few words into the microphone to her many fans listening across the world, she announces, "Hello, everybody.
This is Mrs. Norman Maine. It is not known how much Dorothy Parker contributed to the finished script. When she first saw the film, Parker was proud of her contribution and boasted about both the script and the film, but in later life she believed that she had contributed nothing of significance.
Selznick and Ring Lardner, Jr. Some film historians believe that the marriage of Barbara Stanwyck and Frank Fay was the film's real-life inspiration.
John Bowers has also been identified as inspiration for the Norman Maine character and the dramatic suicide-by-drowning scene near the end of the film Bowers drowned in November The film contains several inside jokes, including Gaynor's brief imitations of Greta Garbo , Katharine Hepburn , and Mae West ; the "Crawford Smear", referring to Joan Crawford 's lipstick; and the revelation that the glamorous Norman Maine's real last name is Hinkle.
Hinkle was the real last name of silent film star Agnes Ayres , and not far removed from Fredric March's real last name, Bickel.
This film also has many similarities to the earlier film What Price Hollywood? Johns loosely based her plot on the experiences of actress Colleen Moore and her husband, alcoholic producer John McCormick — , and the life and death of director Tom Forman , who committed suicide following a nervous breakdown.
Four years after What Price Hollywood? Cukor felt the plot was too similar to What Price Hollywood? RKO executives considered filing a plagiarism suit against Selznick International Pictures because of the similarities in the story, but eventually chose not to take legal action.
Cukor later directed the musical remake starring Judy Garland. A common Hollywood myth about the film is that Lana Turner appeared as an extra in one of the scenes in the film.
Turner often denied the myth over the years, mentioning that she was discovered several months after the picture had finished production.
The lyrics were written by Dorothy Dick to the music of Max Steiner. Contemporary reviews were very positive. Frank S. Nugent of The New York Times called the film "one of the year's best shows" as well as "good entertainment by any standards, including the artistic, and convincing proof that Hollywood need not travel to Ruritania for its plots; there is drama aplenty in its own backyard.
While the story is somewhat reminiscent of other behind-the-scene yarns, the manner of its telling makes it convincing and distinguished.
At the time of the release of the film, a minute transcription — a pre-recorded radio show issued on inch disc — promoting the film's release was made.
The narrated promotional radio show included sound clips from the film. The show was recorded and released through the World Broadcasting System, with disc matrix number H Altogether, the four movies received 25 nominations for various Academy Awards, winning only three , Best Writing original story ; , Best Music original song ; , Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures original song , and also an honorary award in color photography.
Whitney then sold the film to Film Classics, Inc. With declining rerun revenue, Film Classics placed the film up for sale with producer Edward L.
Alperson with the intent to remake the film. Back at his LA mansion, John finds Quentin, a magazine writer, swimming half-naked in his swimming pool.
She says she would do anything to get an exclusive interview. Initially he thinks it's with him, but she confirms it's an interview with Esther that she wants.
When Esther arrives soon after, she finds them in bed together. Quentin tries to interview Esther, but John tells Quentin to get out.
They return to their small home out west, where they have been happiest. One day, John wakes early and tells Esther he's going to pick up Brian from the airport.
Esther asks him to hurry back. John leaves the house with a beer in hand and drives off in his flashy sports car. He continues to drink his beer, while driving too fast and recklessly.
In the next scene, a police dispatch is discussing an accident. The shell of a red sports car is on its side. A helicopter lands at the scene and Esther and Brian run out towards John, whose dead body is covered by a blanket.
Esther asks for another blanket and cleans his face. She lays on John and while crying she asks him what is she supposed to do without him.
He is taken away in an ambulance. Back at the LA mansion, Esther hears John's voice calling out for someone to answer the telephone.
But she discovers it's just a tape of the old songwriting session during which the telephone had interrupted his singing.
She cries on the step in the now empty house, saying that he was a liar and he wasn't supposed to leave her.
The final scene is what seems to be a memorial concert for John. Esther walks out and is introduced as Esther Hoffman-Howard.
The audience raises candles as a tribute to her late husband. At the last beat of the song, Esther spreads her arms wide and looks up to the heavens.
Directed by Frank Pierson , the film updates the original story and screenplay of William A. It also features Gary Busey and Sally Kirkland.
Kristofferson's then-wife Rita Coolidge and Tony Orlando appear briefly as themselves. The earlier films had portrayed the behind-the-scenes world of Hollywood filmmaking.
However, this version adapted the story to the music business. For example, the and films each portrayed the lead female character winning an Academy Award , while the and versions depicted the heroine winning a Grammy Award instead.
Among actors considered for the male lead were Neil Diamond and Marlon Brando. Streisand and Peters wanted Elvis Presley for the role: they met with Elvis and discussed the film, and he was interested in taking the part, thinking it would revive his film career.
Elvis' manager, Colonel Tom Parker , insisted Elvis have top billing and asked for a substantial sum of money for the role, even though he had not had an acting role since , and people were unsure what kind of box office draw he would be.
This effectively ended Elvis's involvement with the project. Parker also did not want to have Elvis portrayed as having a show business career in decline because this was far from the truth, with Elvis playing to packed auditoriums wherever he toured in the States.
Diamond, who knew Streisand and had attended high school with her at Erasmus Hall High School in Brooklyn, was also seriously considered but had to decline due to his extensive concert commitments, and Kristofferson got the part of John Norman Howard.
Kristofferson denied modelling his character on Jim Morrison : "That's a good idea but it's not true. I don't think I ever met Morrison.
A lot of people said we looked alike — shirts off, beards — but that washed-up rock star was more about me. Its soundtrack album was also an international success, reaching number 1 in many countries and selling nearly 15 million copies worldwide.
It featured the ballad " Evergreen Love Theme from A Star Is Born ", which became one of the biggest hits of Streisand's career, spending three weeks at number one in the United States, and peaking at number three in the United Kingdom.
The film credit reads: "Miss Streisand's clothes from The film was choreographed by David Winters of West Side Story fame, who worked closely with Streisand to perfect the movie's dancing sequences.
The film entered general release in the United States on December 19, The site's consensus states; "A lack of memorable music, chemistry between its leads, and an overlong runtime prompts this modish iteration of A Star is Born to fizzle out quickly.
Roger Ebert gave the film two and a half stars out of three, writing in his review, "There is, to begin with, no denying Barbra Streisand's enormous talent.
At the end of 'A Star Is Born' the camera stays on her for one unbroken shot of seven or eight minutes, and she sings her heart out, and we concede that she's one of the great stars of the movies, one of the elemental presences I thought Miss Streisand was distractingly miscast in the role, and yet I forgave her everything when she sang.
A half-hour in, I wrote 'a star is boring' in my notes, and was not later persuaded I'd been wrong. One loses sight of the ostensible dramatic tragedy, because the real tragedy appears to be Streisand's misuse of her talent.
Luckily, Kris Kristofferson makes a far better impression. His eyes have the proper faraway look that betokens a mind besotted either with booze or love, and he drifts toward his destiny with none of James Mason 's fireworks but with a great deal of quiet charm.
In the and versions, Janet Gaynor and Judy Garland were each depicted on screen as winning an Academy Award , yet neither won for their film in real life though Gaynor and Streisand had won Oscars before, and Garland had won a Academy Juvenile Award.
According to at least one Streisand biography [ vague ] , unhappy with a few of Frank Pierson 's scenes, Streisand later directed them herself a claim also made for 's The Main Event , adding to the rumors that she and Pierson clashed constantly during production.
