It is hinted that they had previously been romantically linked in their youth, prior to Robin leaving to fight in the Holy Land.

Their relationship upon his return is strained, but develops into a friendship. Their relationship comes to a dramatic climax in the series one finale, both admitting their love for one another.

A love - triangle challenges their relationship in series two with Marian becoming closer to the Sheriff's second-in-command, Sir Guy of Gisborne Richard Armitage.

Guy often puts Marian in difficult situations where she has to appear to help him, when actually working to protect Robin and the people of Nottingham.

Marian has her own alias,'The night watchman' dubbed by the people she secretly helps; Robin is initially unaware, until her identity it revealed in episode three of the first season.

The Sheriff constantly tries to capture or kill Robin and the outlaws for continuously interfering in his scheme to take over England.

The second series sees the Sheriff step up his plans to take control, finally culminating in a battle in the Holy Land.

As the outlaws foil the Sheriff's attack on King Richard with aid from Marian who is killed by Guy of Gisborne whilst she is protecting the injured King.

Robin and Marian are married as she lays dying, with the outlaw gang as witnesses. Djaq and Will, now together, decide to stay in the Holy Land after they encounter a friend of Djaq's uncle.

They do not return in the third and final series. The third series staggered the entry of new characters and only Robin appeared in all thirteen episodes.

As the series opens, Tuck David Harewood , a spiritual preacher returning to England, and Kate Joanne Froggatt , a Locksley villager, are introduced; both soon becoming part of Robin's gang.

Isabella Lara Pulver , Gisborne's younger sister who is running from an abusive husband, arrives soon after and starts a secret relationship with Robin.

Her link to the castle through Gisborne is used by the gang while she plots revenge against her brother, but her thirst for independence, power, and vengeance soon leads her to become a ruthless Sheriff and a sworn enemy.

Toby Stephens appears as Prince John in three episodes mid-series, successfully exploiting the rift between Gisborne and Vaisey, leading to the latter's supposed death at Gisborne's hand.

Gisborne is briefly made Sheriff before Isabella uses her influence to replace him, leaving Gisborne a fugitive, and following the death of a young villager with whom he was briefly imprisoned, seeking revenge.

This opens the door to a liaison with Robin and sets up the tenth episode of the series, told largely through flashbacks, which revisits Robin and Gisborne's history.

It features Dean Lennox Kelly , Sophie Winkleman , Paul Hilton , and Ian Reddington as Robin's father, Gisborne's parents, and another past Locksley villager respectively, and reveals the existence of Archer played by Clive Standen from episode 11 , the illegitimate child of Robin's father and Gisborne's mother, who Robin's dying father begs them to find.

Archer is Robin's equal with a bow and arrow. This, coupled with his biological ties to Robin, Gisborne and Isabella, led to speculation that he was set to take over the programme's lead role following Jonas Armstrong's departure.

Although they are lured into a trap set by Archer and Isabella, they succeed when Archer turns against his half-sister.

However, Allan is killed by a storm of arrows when Vaisey reappears at the head of an army wielding Byzantine fire.

Gisborne is killed in a sword fight with the Sheriff and Isabella as he defends the castle, and Robin is poisoned by the blade of Isabella.

However, before succumbing to his wound, Robin evacuates the villagers from Nottingham, and fires a flaming arrow into the Byzantine fire stored in the castle.

Vaisey and Isabella realize too late and perish with their army in an explosion that destroys Nottingham Castle. As the castle burns, Robin returns to Sherwood Forest, says goodbye to the remainder of his outlaw gang and encourages Archer to take up the defense of the people of England.

Robin heads off to a clearing in the forest, and is greeted by Marian as a vision, welcoming him into the afterlife.

Marian's theme is played throughout the sequence. The remaining outlaws find Robin's body, and after a small ceremony, set out to continue their quest to end suffering in England.

The extended Robin version, featuring Armstrong escaping from a cell, was shown in cinemas. But Robin Hood counters that under English common law, an accused animal is entitled to a fair trial, the same as a human.

While Robin Hood drags out the trial, Friar Tuck gets the cook drunk and switches geese. When the deception is revealed, the lord relents and pardons the goose.

Two episodes, "Brother Battle" 84 and "To Be a Student" 90 emphasized the Catholic Church's struggle to educate commoners, and even the children of serfs, despite laws forbidding the practice and in the face of opposition from the nobility.

The writers created supporting characters who were likable and occasionally resourceful. Lady Marian, Little John, and the other Merry Men carry the day without the star of the show ever showing his face.

Most of the time, however, Robin is required to save the day following the usual comment about "Many men will be noticed. Only one going in will be successful", etc.

Despite simplistic plotting required by the minute format, the writing was both professional in its handling of situations, and pointed in its dialog.

Anachronisms abound: the lipsticked girl with modern hairdo in the Friar Tuck episode, for instance, wine cups for each occupant at a table in "Checkmate" when that only became the practice hundreds of years later, the 20th century school implements in "Brother Battle", the use of Guineas from the s as coinage, written tavern signs when most were illiterate, and a "bard" in "The Challenge" episode who sings a song to the late 17th-century tune of " Lillibullero " in 13th-century England.

All this is typical of every series of historical fiction, but the show's producers pointed with pride to their accuracy, courtesy of hired consultants.

There was also an element of self-parody at times that sat uneasily on the series [ citation needed ].

In one episode, "The Challenge", the plot-as-such was finished halfway through the show, and during the rest, the hapless Richard of the Lea and his wife worried as their larder and wine cellar were emptied during a siege with Robin, Little John, and Tuck eating and dancing all day and night.

The series was explicitly created by Weinstein to enable the commissioning of scripts by blacklisted American writers. Howard Koch , who was also blacklisted, served for a while as the series' script editor.

The blacklisted writers were credited under pseudonyms, to avoid the attention of studio executives.

The sponsored prints of the first five episodes of series one, screened by CBS in the US on its first run, had no writer credits on their end title sequences; writers were only credited on sponsored prints from episode 6 onward, only later non-sponsored US re-run prints of series one have writer credits for these episodes, some of which differ from writer credits on UK prints.

After the blacklist collapsed, Lardner said that the series' format allowed him "plenty of opportunities to comment on issues and institutions in Eisenhower-era America"; presumably "A Tuck in Time" was such an episode, in which a twin of Friar Tuck arrives boasting of his willingness to sell a weapon that could destroy the world.

In addition to the redistributive themes of a hero who robs from the rich and gives to the poor, many episodes in the programme's first two seasons included the threat that Robin and his band would be betrayed to the authorities by friends or loved ones, much as the blacklisted writers had been.

But the half-hour length episodes and broad-target market precluded any political criticism that went beyond the generalities of 19th century Robin Hood revival books.

Whilst interiors were filmed at Nettlefold Studios , location shooting for the series took place on the nearby Wisley Common , Wisley , Surrey, and at the adjoining Foxwarren Park estate, near Cobham , owned by Hannah Weinstein.

Horses used for filming were also stabled at Foxwarren House, which had a projection room for viewing daily film rushes and completed films.

As well as this, establishing shots and short film sequences were also shot at various medieval buildings in the UK including: Allington Castle in Kent, this was used to establish Fitzwalter Castle, Marian's home in the series, Painshill Park , near Cobham, Saltwood Castle in Hythe , and Pencoed Castle near Magor in Monmouthshire.

Each episode in the first two series started with a country scene of faux-normal life in Olde England during which an introductory poem in rhymed cadence to the tune of the English folksong " Early One Morning ," which derived from a much later period than the series.

The poem was a humorous summary vignette of what could be expected in the episode. An actor portraying the Minstrel would use the same melody at the final fade to black before the end credits for 1st run CBS sponsored screenings in the USA, letting viewers know that the sponsor "now begs a word with you.

At times it is heard as background music at parties. In "The Betrothal," Sir Richard's son plays it on his flute while his betrothed sings it.

In the episode "Carlotta," Little John sings it to his sweetheart. In one of its most prominent uses, Robin forces a group of soldiers to sing it.

It is worth noting that this melody was whistled by Little John before his first meeting with Robin in The Adventures of Robin Hood Carl Sigman wrote the words and music for the theme song which was sung by Dick James.

The song is still fondly remembered:. These versions had the extended song with fives verses and the chorus six times.

The sound effect at the start of the theme tune, of the arrow being fired into a tree, was produced by record producer Joe Meek , who was also the recording engineer on the Gary Miller version.

This song was parodied by Monty Python's Flying Circus in their Dennis Moore sketch, which depicted a masked highwayman from the 18th century more like the Scarlet Pimpernel stealing lupins from the rich to give to the poor.

It is also played at every Nottingham Forest home match. It, the titles and the whole show was also parodied in the Hancock's Half Hour episode "Ericson the Viking", where Sid James talks Hancock into appearing in an on the cheap historic drama "Ericson, Ericson, Ericson the Good, Ericson, Ericson, nipping through the wood Der Soundtrack wurde auf dem Album Legend veröffentlicht und gewann mehrere Auszeichnungen.
